BCS Winged Zed & Thanks

My final Winged Zed for this football season goes to
 Marvin Johnson
for calling and catching the pass on
the fake punt in the BCS Championship Game.
A leader on all special teams, Marvin ended 2010 with 26 tackles.

I guess it is really over when you decide to delete the BCS Championship Game from your DVR.
Time to let it go, and move on.   BUT, I would like to echo the sentiment that it is time for us to have a tournament to decide the national champ.   Thirty-five days off cheated all of us the offensive show we deserved as both Duck and Tiger fans.   The layover dulled the sharpness of these offenses from lack of game competition.  A 64 team tournament would take 6 weeks to complete.   If they started the week of Thanksgiving, skip the week of Christmas, the final would take place January 8th in 2012 (I base my schedule on Saturday dates when college football should be played).  Unfortunately, the NCAA lives in fear of the bowl organizers and corporate sponsors (see the decision to allow the 4 Ohio State players to participate in the Sugar Bowl).   Last year 70 teams played in bowl games, my format cuts it by 6.  Drop a few of those 6 win teams that, in all honesty, did not belong in post season and we have a real championship series.

And now,
THANKS!
Thanks to this Duck team that took us on a ride
we never would have dreamed of.
It was like going from the Ferris Wheel at the fair
 to Space Mountain in Disneyland.
It had a few downs, but overwhelmingly it had ups.   After last summer, most of the Duck faithful wondered where we would go without Masoli.   Answer: further than our wildest imagination.   This group of Ducks will go down as the finest in the history of the program.   Coach Kelly has proven in two years he ranks at the top of the coaching class in the NCAA.    Can you believe his two year record
is 22 - 3?  Thanks guys, when I wear my Duck stuff on vacation, I'm sure I will get a few comments, "Go Ducks" instead of "who dat"?
 Can't wait until next year....

Do You Feel A Draft?

Time for the underclassmen to declare their intentions - stay in school, honor a commitment to their teammates and school or head off for the NFL draft.   I guess you can see where I sit on this issue.

Jacquizz Rogers
Recently, one of my Beaver Believer friends told me that 'Quizz has been
compared to Barry Sanders.
 Really?
Sure, Mr. Rogers is a good back, but lets not get carried away.  That would be like comparing me to Ernest Hemingway!   Oh by the way, have I ran my book idea by you all?   I plan to call it "The Old Man and The Z" or maybe
"For Whom the Ball Rolls", any of those sound good to you?
I smell a Pulitzer, or is it the litter box....

Cam Newton
The Steve Miller Band calls this one, "Go on, take the money and run".
Good idea, get out of Auburn before the NCAA grows a spine and imposes sanctions on the Tigers for daddy's "pay for play" scam.   More rats off the sinking ship, d-lineman Nick (un)Fairley and receiver Darvin Adams.
must see the writing on the wall....

A Cluster of Thought

This just in... Chizik's Tigers Lack Class!

At first I thought it was just me, a little sensitive after the loss.  But, after searching the blogs there were some others that made similar observations.   Gene Chizik refused to acknowledge and congratulate his opponents following Auburn's win of the national title.  D lineman Nick Fairley (kinda ironic to have a name like this when he's a master of the cheap shot) ran his mouth regarding his domination of the Oregon line.  According to more comments by Chizik, apparently the Ducks did not stand a chance since there was a divine plan in place for the Tigers.   C'mon Gene do you really think there is an Auburn Tiger banner in Heaven?

Ashamed?
After the BCS loss, one of the Eugene television sportscasters said the Ducks had nothing to be ashamed of.   What would they have to be ashamed of?  A perfect conference season?   The highest scoring offense in the nation?   The nation's leading rusher?  Ashamed would be if our QB's dad had tried to broker a deal for pay for play.  A bit of advice to this joker from Honest Abe,  "Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

Even It Up!

BCS post game comments by Nick Saban and Urban Meyer, two SEC dinks.   Geez, ESPN, couldn't you replace one of these two with a Pac-10 coach to keep it from becoming an SEC love fest?

Haters
What is wrong with the OSU fans?   They are just ecstatic over the Ducks' loss in the BCS Championship.  I don't understand, sure we beat you last year for the conference title, and sure we beat you this year to keep you out of a bowl game, and sure we have the best facilities in the Pac 10.....uh OK, maybe I get it.   BUT, I still cheer for our "little cousins" when the play anyone else but the Ducks.   C'mon Beavs show a little love.

Roll out the Welcome Matt
From the television shots (I can't afford tickets to see a game in person until Bi-Mart does a 2 for 1), Matt Court is a spectacular venue for college basketball.  That floor, however, is just plain ugly.  It looks like somebody finger painted it with baby food.  Yikes!

No Luck for the NFL

Imagine this, a sure first round draft pick, probable number 1 in the entire draft, set to earn millions - deciding to remain in school and earn his degree.   Andrew Luck made this decision and showed me more character than anyone I can think of in recent sports history. Not only is this a tribute to his character, but to the upbringing his parents provided.   As a Duck fan, I hate to see him back.   As an observer of  human character, I applaud him.   Whatever NFL team chooses Luck in 2012, I will instantly become a fan.  His decision shows his dedication to his education and his team mates.   In a society that hops to the next best thing regardless of finishing previous commitments, Andrew shows us there are athletes who follow through.   Thanks Andrew, you made my day.

And now to a special Winged Zed.

This one goes to
The Luck Family
Andrew for his outstanding personal qualities
and to his parents, Oliver and Kathy, for teaching him well.
Maybe Andrew can get a summer internship as an Integrity Coach for Ohio State,
Lord knows they could use one.

Some Thoughts

* Coach Jim Tressel & Sugar is Sweet
I thought Coach Tressel was a stand up guy.  WRONG!  His buddy, former Detroit linebacker Chris Spielman, stated on TV that he thought Coach T would hold the rules violators out of the Sugar Bowl for at least a quarter.   But when the advertisers and bowl organizers pitched a fit, he made his boys promise to return next year - if he played them them in the game.  They promised, and they played, and I so sure they will honor their promise to return - ........yeah and the check is in the mail.

* Rumors
I heard the 2011 Sugar Bowl MVP trophy is listed on E-Bay.

I also heard that you can buy a ticket to the
2011 National Championship Game for $180,000.
Contact Cecil at 555-555-5555.

* In the small world department.  Daughter #1 of the Coach is on her honeymoon in Key West, FL.   In their adventures around town, she was surprised to find a green sign on a building that says "Southern Most Duck Nation".  Turns out the owner's wife is from Eugene and is a huge Duck fan.

* Once, again, I poke fun at a team and they rise up.   Washington put a smack down on the Huskers in the Holiday Bowl after I asked if anyone was predicting Nebraska by 30.   Congrats to the Dawgs and shut my mouth.
